What is a Tandem Skydive?
In recent years, tandem skydiving has been popularized as the perfect first jump experience. You will attach directly to the front of a certified instructor’s harness, and freefall together from between 13,500 and 14,000 feet, all the way down to 5000 feet, where the instructor deploys the parachute. From this exit altitude, you will experience up to an ample 60 second freefall—plenty of time to enjoy the skydive! Then, you will float to the ground under a special, large parachute built for two. You will actively participate in directing the parachute’s flight towards the landing area. Very few skydiving schools give you the opportunity to fly the parachute during a tandem jump.
We specialize in providing you with a professional experience from higher altitudes in larger, more powerful airplanes than the smaller skydiving centers using only smaller Cessna 182 airplanes. The “tandem only” drop zones will only take you to a minimum exit altitude for a 10-second freefall to cut corners on fuel costs. This is not only unprofessional, it is short changing the customer. Longer freefall time allows you to truly experience what skydiving is all about. Don’t let yourself be shortchanged, especially if you only plan to make one skydive!
This method requires the least amount of training—usually about 20 to 30 minutes. You can relax knowing that you are attached to a United States Parachute Association certified instructor who will handle all the details. Yes, that’s right, RELAX!
Tandem can also be used for initial training and transition to the Accelerated Freefall Program (AFF). Many people have found a couple of tandem jumps work as great ice-breakers into the world of skydiving! Prospective skydivers can make 2 tandem jumps, take the Accelerated Freefall first jump ground training, and then start AFF at Category B, the second jump in the AFF Program.
Video and Photos
Since your first tandem skydive jump is such a monumental event, we highly recommend you check out our Video and Photo Packages. From gearing up on the ground, to the plane ride, to the freefall and the landing, you can relive the feeling of leaping from a plane over and over. Even if you go on to make thousands of skydives, you will only experience one FIRST jump…don’t wish after the fact that you had gotten video! Our video staff uses the latest digital video equipment to give you the sharpest image possible. We then edit the footage into a film with music and place it on a USB drive for you (additional $5) and email it to your address of choice. Our video staff also will take 50-100 digital still photos for you to show off to your friends and family.
What to Bring
Take pride in knowing that you have accomplished what less than 1% of the world has ever done! All you need to bring with you is a good pair of tennis shoes and comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. Anyone with long hair should ensure they have a hair-tie, and leave the jewelry at home! Don’t jump with anything in your pockets, or anything you wouldn’t want to lose in the sky! We DO jump all year long at VSC. In case of weather delays, etc., plan to be at the airport for at least half a day (6 hours) when coming for a tandem skydive. We also have snacks and beverages available for purchase, but feel free to bring your own coolers! We have picnic tables available in the spectator area.
Here is an example of a tandem video. It is a shorter version of what you would receive with the Video Package.
